Violence In Schools : Government Works On Solutions

The Ministers of Higher, Secondary and Basic Education presented statements in the Cabinet meeting on the phenomenon and the Prime Minister gave combat directives.

The cabinet meeting of March 5, 2020 chaired by Prime Minister, Head of Government, Chief Dr Joseph Dion Ngute served as the occasion for government to diagnose the upsurge of violence in schools and for the adoption of a workable synergy to tackle the problem.
The Minister of State for Higher Education, Professor Jacques Fame Ndongo, Minister of Secondary Education, Prof. Nalova Lyonga and that of Basic Education, Prof. Laurent Serge Etoundi Ngoa all took turns to present the state of affairs of violence in their respective ministries of competence and proposed solutions. 
Speaking to the press after the cabinet meeting that lasted for more than three hours, the Minister of State for Higher Education, Jacques Fame Ndongo described the various forms of violence in the higher education system. He said there were physical, moral, social, psychological, behavioural and verbal violence that exist in all educational systems in the world. Taking the case of Cameroon, he said, there is a noticeable drop in the violence thanks to the social university governance system implemented. He said with the system, emphasis is laid on creating awareness as well as education on moral, educational, cultural and behavioural values. In this way, he specified, in the six State Universities excluding those of Bamenda and Buea that are currently within the context of the socio-political crisis, the 273 private institutes of higher learning function in an atmosphere of calm and serenity. He said the Prime Minister instructed some operations that have to be put in place.
At the basic education level, Minister Laurent Serge Etoundi Ngoa, who also talked to the press, acknowledged the existence of violence in nursery and primary schools, firstly because schools in the urban centres are overcrowded.
