Colombia: Brazilian Football Team Perishes In Plane Crash

Over 75 people died when the plane came down near the city of Medellin.

A plane carrying 81 people, including a top Brazilian football team, crashed on November 28, 2016, on approach to the city of Medellin in Colombia, the BBC reported. Police said six people survived the crash, but the rest died. The chartered aircraft, flying from Brazil via Bolivia, was carrying members of the Chapecoense football team.

The team had been due to play in the final of the Copa Sudamericana on November 30, 2016, against Medellin team, Atletico Nacional. The first leg of the final of the cup, South America's second most important club competition, has now been suspended. The match was seen as the biggest in the history of Chapecoense, which entered Brazil's top division for the first time in 2014.

Al Jazeera said at least 11 journalists were on board the ill-fated plane. The entire Chapocoense football team - and accompanying entourage of staff - were among 72 passengers and nine crew members on board the aircraft.
