Covid-19 : Senate Offers Support For Government’s Measures

It’s President Marcel Niat Njifenji opened the second ordinary session in Yaounde on June 10, 2020.
The Senate has promised its support to government’s efforts in mitigating the impact of the Coronavirus or COVID- 19 pandemic. These are in the areas of strengthening economic resilience, backing local production initiatives, improving health infrastructure and capacity; and supporting medical research efforts. The pledge was made at the Yaounde Conference Centre on Wednesday, June 10, 2020, by Senate President, Marcel Niat Njifenji, while opening the second ordinary session for the year.
Attending the ceremony amongst others were the Speaker of the National Assembly, Cavaye Yeguie Gibril, the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Chief Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute, cabinet ministers and other senior government officials. Marcel Niat noted that the Coronavirus pandemic was not completely dealt with. But like in many other countries, life in Cameroon was beginning to return to normal. He cited the recent resumption of classes by universities and tertiary institutions and students and pupils who will sit this year’s certificate exami- nations.
He lauded the measures taken by government to contain the situation, saying the nation was united behind President Paul Biya to fight COVID-19. He praised the people’s resilience and sense of solidarity in the face of the pandemic. Marcel Niat noted that the pandemic has led to the can- cellation of several public func- tions, with government taking measures to restrict certain liberties in order to protect lives. The Senate President acknow- ledged that Cameroon was going through very difficult times the first time in recent memory it was facing such a major health challenge. He commended President Paul Biya for what he described as the “efficient” management of the crisis, while at the same time assuring the continuation of economic activities.
