Regional Councils : Fully Operational Soon

Greater attention in Cameroon is now  being focused at the Regional Councils that will likely go fully operational in the days ahead after the observation of a few remaining procedures. 
The bureaus of the Regional Councils were elected on December 22, 2020 in compliance with Section 307 of Law No. 2019/024 of 24 December 2019 to Institute the General Code of Regional and Local Authorities which provides that, “During its maiden session, the Regional Council shall elect from among its members a President assisted by a bureau comprising a senior Vice President, a vice president, two questors and two secretaries.”  However, there are specificities for the North West and South West Regions that each enjoys a special status. The organs of the two regions are the Regional Assembly and the Regional Executive Council. The deliberative organ, the Regional Assembly comprises of the House of Divisional Representatives and the House of Chiefs. Section 352 (1) of the General Code of Regional and Local Authorities with respect to election provides that, “ The Regional Executive Council shall be the executive organ of the region. It shall comprise: One President; One Vice President; One Commissioner for Economic Development; One Commissioner for Health and Social Development; One Commissioner for Educational, Sports and Cultural Development; two Secretaries and One Questor.”
The provisions of the law with respect to the election were respected all over. In the North West and South West Regions that are enjoying a special status, besides the election of the bureau members, the Commissioners of the various Committees of each Regional Council were also elected. This process had to follow in the other Regional Councils after the election of the bureaus. In some regions the Commissioners of the committee were also elected. What remains now is the constitution of the committees.
