Lake Chad Basin : Strengthened Synergy To Fight Violent Extremism

Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria, four countries of the Lake Chad Basin that are hard hit by the violent extremism perpetrated by the Boko Haram terrorist sect will in the coming two years witness scale up in the stabilisation measures. 
This will be the fruit of the Technical Coordination Committee Meeting of the Regional Stabilisation Facility (RSF) that took place in Yaounde from August 18-20, 2021 during which the second phase of the RSF was validated and endorsed. The second phase of the stabilisation facility is calibrated to respond to social problems, security, human rights, role of law and livelihoods needs of the populations of the affected areas.  Focus will be to provide basic services and necessities to people who choose to return to the places of origin so that they can lead decent lives, rebuild destroyed infrastructure and revitalise the economies. The meeting organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) therefore enabled members to take stock of the two-year phase I of the Regional Stabilisation Facility   and to agree on the approach, scale and process of the RSF Phase II.  The UNDP, donors and partners are working with the governments of the affected countries. These countries have their individual strategies but in the face of regional challenges have to work together.
Speaking during the close of the meeting, the UNDP Resident Representative to Cameroon, Jean Luc Stalon said the results of the first phase of the Regional Stabilisation Facility were encouraging to the extent that they now talk of “prove of concept.” He further said that they have been encouraged by partners to continue work and to scale up the stabilisation operation in order to address the pressing needs of the population.
