Political Parties : Sociological Component As Integrating Factor

Many political parties are stepping up efforts to be inclusive in their executive bureaus and lists for national elections in compliance with the current drive to consolidate integration.

President Paul Biya who also doubles as the National President of the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM)  is bent on ensuring the consolidation of national integration and living together  in Cameroon with the party as the bedrock. 
In Circular No. 001/CPDM/NP of 8 July 2021 relating the framework for the ongoing renewal of the executives of the basic organs of the CPDM and particularly concerning the lists of candidates, President Biya said, “The constitution of the lists of candidates shall comply with the following requirements; strengthening national integration, representativeness and sociological balance and inclusive of women, youths, minorities and people with disabilities.” The open policy to promote inclusiveness of all sociological components of the society in running the affairs of the CPDM is just a tip of the iceberg in the policies practised my many political parties in Cameroon. The Electoral Code further makes it incumbent on political parties to promote integration when it imposes the respect of the sociological aspect in the constitution of lists for elections of municipal councillors, regional councillors, Members of the National Assembly and Senators. Lists that failed to respect the sociological aspect of each community have hitherto been rejected by the Electoral Board of Elections Cameroon (ELECAM). The key component has been the inclusion of people from the different ethnic origins residing in the said communities. In rural communities where almost people from the same ethnic groups reside, emphasis is put on the inclusion of minorities, indigenous people such as Mbororos and Pygmies), women, youths and people with disabilities.
Political parties such as the National Union for Democracy and Progress (NUDP), Union of the Populations of Cameroon (UPC), Cameroon Democratic Union (CDU) and others that are preparing for their respective national elective conventions and congresses, certainly have at the back of their minds the integrating factor which is the respect of sociological components starting from the constit...
