The gradual resumption of socio-cultural, economic and political activities in the North West and South West Regions notwithstanding sporadic attacks call for review of action.
Prime Minister, Head of Government, Joseph Dion Ngute during his recent visit to Buea, South West Region from September 21 – 24, 2021, vividly described the security situation on the ground in the crisis- affected North West and South West Regions.
Addressing the population to explain the level of the implementation of the recommendations of the Major National Dialogue and other government actions aimed at bringing back peace and normalcy to the North West and South West Regions, he said, “There is abundant qualitative and quantitative evidence indicating an overall improvement in the socio-economic, political and security situation on the ground in the North West and South West Regions since late 2020.” He cited indicators to include school enrolment figures, number of academic institutions which have re-opened, relative security, restart of economic activity and gradual return of internally displaced persons and gradual collapse of the ghost town operations. Before this, the National Coordinator of the Presidential Plan for the Reconstruction and Development of the North West and South West Regions, Paul Tasong in an exclusive interview granted Cameroon Tribune indicated that the security situation in the two regions had improved tremendously. He said that despite sporadic attacks recorded, there was a general trend towards appeasement. Indeed, the number of confrontations between the security forces and armed separatist fighters have greatly reduced compared to the situation in 2018/ 2019 when the crisis got to the apex.
