The Kumba-based CAMNEWS correspondent died in Buea Sunday following a road accident at Bombe.
The pen from Kumba is broken. The CAMNEWS correspondent, Asong Sylvester, based in Kumba for Meme Division, died in the afternoon of 9 January, 2022, in the Baptist Hospital Mutengene. His death resulted from a road accident at Bombe near Mbalangi where the vehicle he boarded was heading to Kumba. Apparently in high speed late in the evening of that fateful day, the vehicle had a head-on collision with another coming from Kumba.
The social media was awash with the horrible scene posting some six persons reportedly dead from the accident at Bombe. Asong did not die on the spot. But after sustaining right leg and left hand multiple fractures in addition to a deep wounded face, Asong was ambulanced from the Kumba General Hospital to the Baptist Hospital Mutengene for specialized bone care. Close family members expressed that he succumbed to internal bleeding. Asong’s corpse was transferred to the Kumba General Hospital mortuary pending burial arrangements.
Asongu Sylvester Asapngu, his real name, was in his late 60s. He hailed from Bellua-Lebang in Fontem Subdivision in Lebialem Division of the South West Region. He was an active and daring reporter who was always ready to journey to any event site. He was a good mixer, reliable, humble and very friendly. This attitude earned him a lot of news sources and made him a prolific human interest story reporter. He was a corner-stone journalist very focused on societal news as could be testified by his strings on the Cameroon Insider and the national bilingual daily, Cameroon Tribune.
