Their early exits of the two African soccer powers from the 2021 AFCON are bitter pills to swallow by their supporters.
The 33rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations is still on in Cameroon, but the casualties are already enormous. Never in the history of African football has two major favourites been booted out of the competition so early. After the Black Stars were sent parking to Accra last Tuesday, January 18, 2021 by little known and novice the Coelacanths of Comoros at the Roumde Adjia stadium following a startling 2-3 spanking, it was the turn of the current African Champion the Fennecs of Algeria to be ejected prematurely from Africa`s most prestigious soccer jamboree.
For the Black Stars of Ghana, a communique signed on January 19, 2021 by the country`s Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha USSIF is amply pregnant with the gravity of the situation back home, “The entire country is highly disappointed with the abysmal performance and early exit of the Black Stars from the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon…” The Black Stars lacklustre performance can be traced from the first outing. Placed in group C alongside Morocco, Comoros and Gabon, captain Andre Ayew and co were a shadow of themselves. After three matches the team registered only a point and two defeats. Reasons why Minister Mustapha has summoned the Ghanaian football federation for an emergency meeting aimed at putting things right before it is too late.
