Youth Employment : Over 600,000 New Jobs Envisaged Annually

Young job seekers in Cameroon now have high hopes following the announcement by President Paul Biya that, “Thanks to the youth employment promotion policy included in the Priority Action Plan 2030, 600,000 jobs are expected to be created annually, with the involvement of Regional and Local Authorities.”
Employment opportunities are contained in the various programmes and projects government has put in place. President Biya said government will continue to implement the Three-Year Special Youth Plan which for instance, has enabled the financing of 8,430 projects. To enable youths in the diaspora pursue their increasingly visible participation in nation building, government has put in place an incentive framework for the entrepreneurial initiatives. It is called the Support Programme for the Return and Integration of Diasporic Youth. The Head of State disclosed that government intends to further support the call for projects initiatives launched to enable diasporic youth to participate in the development of the country.  Government’s actions to create jobs will be intensified with the setting up of the National Employment Council, which is expected to provide new solutions to reverse the unemployment trend and improve the productivity of enterprises.  
To boost youth entrepreneurship, President Biya announced that in the short term, government plans to mobilise specific national, bilateral and multilateral funding to support the establishment of guarantee fund for young entrepreneurs. The fund is intended to provide project initiators and start-ups with the requisite guarantee to raise capital from financial markets or obtain financing from traditional banks. The advance in digital technology is also another opportunity youths needs to exploit as well as skills from training institutions.
