27th Mount Cameroon Race of Hope: Thunderous Molyko Stadium Marks Event
Fans nursed their appetite while the race happened with many entertainers staging to animate the scene.
The Buea yearly event of Mount Cameroon Race of Hope which was described by some persons as having been eclipsed by the recent 9 January-6 February, 2022, Africa Cup of Nations, enjoyed very little publicity until the day of the event last Saturday. Up to the last week of the international Mount Cameroon Race rendezvous, preparations were only going on in near silence. Meetings were rare in Buea in the name of the Race of Hope. For sure, the rattle and drumming echoes hitherto known of the Race have kind of condensed due to the past years of insecurity in the North West and South West Regions. Worst, this year with the continental football bonanza, many fans almost forgot about it.
Yet, the D-day produced a thunderous Molyko Stadium throughout the eight-hour event. As one entered the Molyko Stadium that hosted the take-off and arrival of athletes, the symbols for patriotism and peacemaking were glaring. On the welcoming banner read: “Youths of Cameroon and diaspora: let’s be patriots and peacemakers”. Musicians, dancers, singers, displayers of stunning arts and drummers kept the stadium spell-bound and symbolised unity. The famous Nyangono du Sud (from the South) lighted the Molyko Stadium chanting in high lyrical decibel. Mola Mongombe mounted the podium with a spectacle of music and ritual display eating a cock alive. The various Divisions of the South West Region displayed in songs and dances. From launching the event the previous day (Friday) until dishing out the winning trophies (Saturday), the Molyko Stadium knew no recess in two days of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope.
