The Regional Delegate of Public Health affirms that if everyone collaborates with medical advice, in about 10 days we will not talk about this cholera issue again.
With prompt input support from government, international partners and local institutions like the Regional House of Assembly, and the steadfastness at work of the local medics, the cholera epidemic is on the decline in the South West Region. This expression of hope was from Dr. Eko Filbert, Regional Delegate for Public Health, as he addressed the personalities of the Regional House of Assembly for the South West Region last weekend at the cholera treatment centre in Bota-Limbe. The Regional Assembly representatives came to donate to fight the cholera.
By last weekend only 101 patients were still admitted in Bota District hospital down from over 300 the previous weeks. No death registered these days. “As of April 1, 2022 we had cumulative cases, from 27 October 2021, 3,250 cases with about 67 deaths. It is gradually reducing with regards to the drastic measures we took. About five days ago, we had about 220 patients lying in bed in Bota. We had the Regional Hospital Centre in Limbe, Buea Regional Hospital and Integrated Health Centre Mile 16. We have the District Hospital in Kumba, the Muyuka District Hospital and Tiko District Hospital. In other places, cases have reduced. Here in Bota we had about 250 cases ten days ago reduced to some 101 last weekend. In Tiko we had about 25 cases, about 20 cases in Kumba, and Muyuka we had small numbers. All treatment centres are witnessing a decline in admissions of cholera cases.” Dr. Eko explained. Advising the donors not to offer irrelevant gifts, Dr. Eko explained that it would be better to consult the medics on the ground before donating so the material is immediately put to use.
