Decentralisation : United Councils Present Potentials, Ambitions

UCCC National President, Augustin Tamba in a press conference on May 6, 2022 highlighted the capacities of Councils as engines for the development of Cameroon.
Partnerships and development opportunities of municipalities as a contribution to the emergence of Cameroon have been portrayed by the President of the United Councils and Cities of Cameroon (UCCC), Augustin Tamba on May 6, 2022. This was during a press conference granted by the UCCC boss, which also presented a review on the economic tour he conducted with about fifty Mayors in Belgium, Turkey and France under the supervision of the Ministry of Decentralisation and Local Development, and the Special Council Support Fund for Mutual Assistance (FEICOM).
According to the President, Councils have the obligation of contributing to the economic transformation of Cameroon and under his mandate, they are working at drifting from councils of subvention to productive Councils. Natural and human resources, he said, are potentials which need to be exploited by decentralised authorities for community advancement. “Currently, we need to enable Councils to position themselves as productive Councils, this by encouraging the combination of means through the structuring of an efficient inter-communal system. This would enable to strengthen the capacity of the Councils to access international and national funding windows and partners at a certain level for the implementation of high added value projects,” he stated. He noted that fisheries, agriculture, wood, portable water, energy and aquaculture are some of the priority areas of exploitation for Councils. With the rising prices of food products in the local markets, Augustin Tamba said Councils are interested in encouraging agriculture, first from small scales and then second generation agriculture.
