Libya Africa : Union Reconciliation Mission In Tripoli

For seven days, the seasoned diplomates will work hand-in-glove with the country’s authorities to put in place an acceptable roadmap.
On instructions of the head of the High-Level Committee for Discussions on Libya, an Africa Union (AU) delegation is in Tripoli (Libya), to seek ways of reducing tension between the two rival governments in the country and organize a new national reconciliation conference, prior to the general elections. For seven days, the delegation led by Congolese Foreign Minister, Jean-Claude Gakosso, whose country Congo-Brazzaville chairs the High-Level Committee for Discussions on Libya, will hold talks with the different stakeholders. Today, June 22, 2022, they will have discussions with the internationally recognized Prime Minister, Abdel Hamid Dbeibah, while President Denis Sassou-Nguesso, will at the same time in Brazzaville be receiving his rival Fathi Bachagha, appointed by Parliament.
Yesterday, the African delegation, which also includes the Mauritanian mediator Mohamed El Hacen Ould Lebatt, was expected to hold talks with President Mohammed el-Menfi, as well as his two vice-presidents: Abdallah al-Lafi, in charge of the reconciliation file, and Moussa el-Kouni, in charge of the elections. According to the Congolese Foreign Minister the mission comes on the heels of May talks in New York with the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres who “completely supports this African approach” on reconciliation. “We would like to turn the page, move towards forgiveness as in South Africa”, specifies the Minister. “Organizing elections without reconciliation could be a source of violence, the Libyans know it very well,” Jean-Claude Gakosso reiterated.
