South West Governor, Barnard Okalia Bilai, calls on Manyu elite to seek peace with their relations and family members who are causing or enabling the destruction of life and property.
The situation is now under control in Akwaya Subdivision in Manyu Division following an attack by gunmen leaving 32 deaths last Saturday 25 June, 2022 in Balin village on the Akwaya-Bamenda road. There were also attacks on other areas including Bakinjaw. The incident has fueled media outlets and prompted statements from Church leaders in their own way. Horrific graphs have appeared on the social media and the local Administration is on their heels to quell the situation and stop further carnage. Worrisome is the fact that the Balin-Akwaya horror was just another level of the unqualified serial violence in Manyu Division after burning down the Mamfe District Hospital and killing 10 humans in Ogoni village some three weeks ago.
Cameroon Tribune was in the South West Governor’s Office yesterday for an authoritative assessment of the situation on the ground. The Governor Barnard Okalia Bilai states what happened and calls on Manyu elite to seek peace with their relations and family members who are causing or enabling the destruction of life and property.
“Last Saturday, 25 June, 2022, Balin Village in Akwaya came under attack by terrorists. The terrorists landed on the village and first attacked the Gendarmerie post to distract the population. After attacking the Gendarmes, the terrorists went to a funeral place where people were assembled to burry a brother to Honourable Aka Martin, a Member of Parliament from that area,” he said. They burnt the corpse with the coffin and when the Gendarmes reacted, they went to the centre of the village after a serious exchange of gun fire and killed 32 persons among them men, women, and children. They destroyed the Health centre and the villagers succeeded to catch four of the terrorists alive, neutralised some of the terrorists. Among those neutralized were four Nigerians.
