Wake Up From Slumber

The performance of Cameroonian clubs in African competitions during the past few decades leaves nothing to write home about. In recent years, Cameroonian clubs have been eliminated at the early stages of the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederations Cup. In the 70s and 80s Cameroonian clubs had dominated continental competitions with clubs like Tonnerre Kalara Club of Yaounde, Canon Sportif of Yaounde, Union Douala and Oryx of Douala to name but these few detecting the continental soccer pace. Canon Yaounde won the African Champions League trophy three times; 1971, 1978 and 1980 and were runners up at the Confederation Cup in 2003. Oryx Douala won the maiden edition of the Champions League in 1965. Union Douala won the competition in 1979 then known as the Africa Cup of Champions. Since then the most remarkable performance of a Cameroonian club in African competition was in 2008 when Coton Sport played the final of the Champions League against Al Ahly of Egypt. In 2021 Coton Sport was eliminated at group stage of the CAF Champions League. PWD of Bamenda was eliminated at the preliminary rounds of the CAF Confederation Cup. The question that comes to mind is why are Cameroonian clubs unable to unable to do it anymore? Cameroonian clubs that used to scare other teams in continental competitions have now become underdogs.
