Cameroon-Romania: 2-1 : Two Victories, One Qualification

For their second appearance in the competition, the Indomitable Lions finished as the first African team to reach the eighth finals of the World Cup.
June 14, 1990 will forever be remembered by football lovers in Cameroon and the world at large. This was the day Cameroon beat Romania 2-1 to secure a second round ticket in the 1990 World Cup. The match took place at 8:00 p.m. at the San Paolo Stadium in Naples. It was the second group B game in the competition. With the advent of the television in Cameroon, many Cameroonians had the opportunity to watch the Indomitable Lions play. After winning the first game against Argentina, the Indomitable Lions knew the world was watching them and so they had to give their best to win the second game. Their objective was to be the first African team to reach the eighth finals of the World Cup.
Under the leadership of their coach Valery Nepomniashchy, the Lions were able to secure another victory over a strong Romanian side, featuring top stars like Gheorghe Hagi, Florin R?ducioiu and Giga Popescu. After 55 minutes the score line was 0-0. Romania created better quality goal attempts but they lost their chances. Worst still their best midfielder was replaced due to injury. However, Coach Nepomniaschy sent in veteran striker Roger Milla and that changed the entire game. The Indomitable Lions were more alive and aggressive as they needed a win by all means.
