Female-Oriented Cancers : Insufficient Screening, Vaccination, Negligence...

These are some of the reasons leading to the high rate of cancer-related deaths amongst women in Cameroon and beyond.
Very few women will be fortunate enough not to encounter cancer at some point in their lives. Whether it is a cancer scare or a cancer diagnosis and whether it is an individual or a loved one going through it, dealing with the reality of cancer can be one of the most distressing medical experiences people can ever have. Cancer is an important social issue. But due to many reasons, people are afraid to face the cancer cell whose origin is not even certain in the scientific world.
Non-Compliance To Vaccination
In contrast to the situation in developed countries, the mortality rate of cancer, especially cervical cancer, is currently high in most developing countries like Cameroon where parents vehemently refuse their girl children from receiving the vaccine against cervical cancer. However, cervical cancer cases could be prevented from an early age as nine before girls are exposed to sex. This is primary prevention, in the form of vaccination against HPV, as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) between the ages of 9 and 14. But, this vaccine is highly rejected by the population as some people say it is meant to render a girl child sterile. If parents happily welcome the introduction of the HPV vaccination, there are hopes that cervical cancer will be eliminated in the near future.
Screening Is Missing
Although early screening is said to be key to preventing and treating cancer, majority of women do not go for a voluntary screening for cancer. Cameroon Tribune (CT) made a random sample among 10 women in Yaounde. The majority of those interviewed do not even have knowledge of the various cancers and how they can be tested.
