Brazil-Uruguay : The Maracanã Blow

The multitude of supporters that thronged the stadium on July 16, 1950 left in shock as underdogs, Uruguay beat the host, Brazil 2-1 in the final of the World cup.
The 1950 World Cup hosted by Brazil was the first since the end of the Second World War. The enthusiasm of football lovers to go back to the stadiums were thus enormous That year, Uruguay, then considered to be an underdog beat Bolivia 8-0 in the group stage from where it went on to tie against Spain (2-2) and win Sweden (3-2). On the other hand, Brazil sailed through to the finals, thrashing every team that came its way. The two nations were now pitted against each other in the final round. The match was played at the Maracanã Stadium in the then-capital of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, on 16 July 1950. Brazil had scored 13 goals in their previous two matches, so every Brazilian believed that despatching tiny Uruguay would be a mere formality. In addition, it seemed natural that Brazil should triumph on its own pitch, in front of the multitude of Brazilian fans in the Maracanã stadium.
At the start, all was going as expected. The Brazilians scored at the 47th minute. In the 66th minute Uruguay scored the equaliser. The goal was not a major problem to Brazil as they knew they will win the competition even with a draw. But they met their doom at the 79th minute. Uruguay...
