Politics : Building Democratic Edifice Continues

The electoral system, rule of law, freedoms and pluralistic democracy have to be deepened and perfected.
President Paul Biya in the revised and edited edition of his book “Communal Liberalism” talking about politics said, “We must irreversibly promote a democratic society in which every citizen enjoys fundamental liberties and participates in the definition of national objectives with the possibility of choosing the persons that would represent him/her in elective posts.”
Other areas of democracy which he insists constitute some of the fundamental objectives to be attained include, the rule of law, civic awareness in citizens through education, multiparty system as an asset a catalyst in the constant construction of the country’s pluralistic democracy and government getting as close to the people as possible.
On this November 6, 2022, President Paul Biya will clock 40 years in power. For these years, he has been working for the concrete realisation of his political vision. Considering that human endeavour cannot be perfect as perfection is only in heaven, Cameroonians have to collectively work to continue to build the political and democratic edifice in the country. Multiparty democracy is a reality in Cameroon since 1990 with the laws on freedom of association including that on the creation of political parties. The electoral process has gone through key mutations with the current biometric registration practised and the process managed by an independent institution, Elections Cameroon (ELECAM). Actors in the electoral process have been variedly appreciating the evolution but have been proposing innovations such as the single ballot paper and biometric voting. After the period of organising pluralistic elections of municipal councillors, Members of the National Assembly, Senators, President of the Republic and Regional Councillors, some criticisms have perpetually been raised with regard to transparency, proper organisation and voter apathy.
