Qatar 2022 : What Chances For African Nations?

Senegal presents high prospects of going far in the competition, meanwhile Cameroon with its experience will be struggling just like the remaining three African sides to impress.


In reaching the quarterfinals in 1990, Cameroon set a record that has not been broken. Senegal and Ghana also reached the quarterfinals in 2002 and 2010 but the continent’s history has been that of relative underachievement. The aforementioned countries plus Tunisia and Morocco are set to begin representing Africa in the upcoming world cup. But their chances of going past the group stage and bettering the quarterfinals result are slim looking at their current form, FIFA ranking as against that of their opponents.
Reigning Africa Cup of Nation’s champions, Senegal seems to be the African side with the greatest chances of going far in the competition. Netherlands maybe the greatest challenge in the opening game, but the rest of Group A is made up of hosts Qatar, in their maiden World Cup appearance and South America’s last automatic qualifier, Ecuador. On the strength of both FIFA rankings and the relative quality of their squad, Senegal are favourites to advance. Mané’s injury concerns may however be a pinch to the team. Cameroon in its eighth participation has a decent chance to go past the group stage but the task ahead promises to be deadly. The first match is a tight opener against Switzerland. Switzerland’s strong defence will be Cameroon’s biggest threat. But breaking down this defence is not impossible. In the second game, Serbia is another stronghold. The team has actually been in form of recent. Brazil is the team with the highest number of trophies in the world cup and is one of the favourites. The forward line of Brazil is impeccable.
