Fight against Corruption : Input Of Parliamentarians

Being the legislative arm of government, they control administrative action to promote transparency.
Corruption is an absurd practice that slows the development of any society. Given the devastating effects of the cankerworm, institutional and collective actions are being put in place to eradicate the ill from the society and rather promote moral integrity. The National Anti-Corruption Commission, CONAC, recently published the corruption status report for 2021 which unfortunately indicates that the State suffered over FCFA 43 billion losses to corruption related damages. This represents an increase of over FCFA 26 billion compared to the damages incurred in 2020, when the loss was at slightly over FCFA 17 billion. As a result, the fight against corruption needs to be intensified and more inclusive.
Parliament (National Assembly and Senate), as the legislative arm of government is actively involved in the fight against corruption. This is done through several ways; questioning members of governments on projects, holding of special plenary sessions for ministers and institutions to present clarifications on ongoing programmes, sensitisation workshops and advocacy amongst others. To give more impetus in combatting the malpractice, the Parliamentary Network Against Corruption has been created during the current legislature (in 2017) and has as President, Hon Essomba Bengono. Under his leadership, the network reiterates its position as government’s watchdog (ensuring citizens are governed in solemn civility and every decision is being accounted for). Lawmakers of the network therefore, have as responsibility to map out strategies to fight corruption and propose legislative solutions to Apart from mapping out strategies to fight corruption, the network will be electing a new bureau to govern its activities to the alarming phenomenon.
