Algeria : Algiers, Tunis Endorse Loan Agreement

The government of Algeria has lend the sum of 200 million US dollars to the Tunisian authorities. The low interest loan agreement signed on December 1, 2022, is to be paid over 15 years, including five grace years, and at a fixed annual interest rate of 1%. A presidential decree issued on December 8, 2022, in the Tunisian Official Gazette states that “the financial protocol concluded in Algeria on December 1, 2022, between the government of the Republic of Tunisia and the government of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, was ratified regarding the granting of a loan for the benefit of the Republic of Tunisia.” In addition to the loan is a gift of 100 US dollars to help the country revamp its economy.  
The signing of the loan agreement between the two countries comes on the heels of several intensive high-level contacts between the Tunisian and Algerian authorities. On November 26, Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra made a quick visit to Tunisia, carrying a message from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to his Tunisian counterpart, Kais Saied. Two days later, the Tunisian Prime Minister Najla Bouden went to Algeria to meet President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, on a one-day visit during which she praised Algeria for standing with her country in the delicate circumstance it is going through.
