The job of ensuring a proper hygiene and sanitation of the environment has not been left to HYSACAM alone.
Making Yaounde and other cities in the country clean is not just the challenge of the government and its partner, but also that of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), goodwill individuals and various Councils. Many individuals and associations are taking private initiatives in ensuring that cities in the country are kept clean. Hence, the job of ensuring a proper hygiene and sanitation of the environment has not been left to the country’s number one private waste management contractor, (HYSACAM).
After the 2021 crisis that rendered some towns in the country dirty for some days, it was resolved that the management of household waste should not be limited to HYSACAM alone. As such, private initiatives and associations joined the bandwagon to ensure the environment was clean. This is how private companies such as THYCHLOF Sarl became committed to the course of keeping Yaounde clean. The Manager of the Company, Mr Batala, explained that its Founder, (a female barrister who opts for anonymity) was one day on her way home when faced with a major challenge caused by the poor disposal of waste. She was blocked by trash which had covered half of the road. This is how she got the initiative to operate a waste disposal company which gives a helping hand in the management of household waste in Yaounde particularly in its various Subdivisions. The company operates in two groups; one during the day and the other at night. Through the company, some 250 youths are devoted to cleaning the town of Yaounde using brooms, shovels, small trucks and caterpillars.
The Environment Solution association, popularly known as BENS in the French Language, is also working against the plastic pollution of the political capital. Through environmental education, the Secretary General of BENS, Judith Emmanuelle Mbede says the population is sensitized on the need to properly dispose their plastic waste. Also, the association organizes campaigns to clean water courses that have been filled with plastic waste. These plastics are later treated by a partner company for recycling.
