Containing Food Crisis : Emergency Committee Begins Combat Efforts
The Cameroon Emergency Food Crisis Response Project launched in Limbe on January 31 will spend FCFA 59 billion to feed over 2.86 million Cameroonians during the project span.
Anticipating a hunger drought in Cameroon, the Government has set up a shield to enable food stability namely the “Steering Committee of the Cameroon Emergency Food Crisis Response Project (PULCCA).” The project was conceived through a loan agreement signed last 26 October 2022 between the Government of Cameroon and the World Bank worth FCFA 59.17 billion or 90.2 million Euros. Of the lot, Cameroon will contribute FCFA 2.5 million US Dollars from its internal resources.
The Committee used its maiden session of 31 January, 2023, in Limbe (South West Region), to work out modalities to facilitate food availability to 2.86 million Cameroonians within the three years of the project span. The PULCCA Project, as explained by Agriculture and Rural Development Minister, Gabriel Mbairobe, is targeting a potentially hunger-stricken populations in the Far North, North, Adamawa, East, North West and South West Regions.
The PULCCA Project meant to mitigate food crisis in Cameroon is pretexted on the Covid-19 pandemic, security crisis raging in four of the mentioned implementation Regions, climatic hazards, and external shocks like the wild Russia-Ukraine war. The effects of these situations range from people displacement, abandonment of farms, and morbidity rate from those crises.
The sustenance commodities to promote will include sorghum, rice, maize, meat, fish and dairy products that constitute daily food staples in Cameroon. As estimated by Minister Mbairobe as he launched the PULCCA Project in Limbe, direct beneficiaries will count 265,490 vulnerable people, 159,000 agro-pastoral and fish farmers, 33,490 food insecure people, 35,000 students in 50 schools receiving ...
