Mount Cameroon Race Of Hope : At 50, New Sponsor Steps In

The yearly event which started in 1973 is slated for February 25, 2023 in Buea.

Preparations for the 2023 edition of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope is at high gear. A press conference on the event was organized on February 1, 2023 in Buea. Chaired by Motomby Mbome, President of Cameroon Athletics Federation, a programme of activities was outlined to give the event the grandeur it deserves. The race marking its 28th edition in 50 years will be on the theme: “Let’s give peace a chance.” The first edition was held on March 10, 1973 where the first cash prize was FCFA 30,000. Amos Ndumbe Evambe, Station Manager of Bonakanda Community Radio, who won the third edition in 1975 had FCFA 60,000 as cash price. 
During the press conference, Motomby Mbome announced that Orange Cameroon has stepped in as the new sponsor of the event. He said that the Athletics Federation has committed itself to ensure that the cash prices to winners are increased by 11%. “We want a situation whereby the winners of the first positions in the male and female categories will go home with FCFA 10 million after taxes would have been deducted,” he explained. The federation is already counting 600 athletes who are expected on the race course to challenge the chariots of the gods. By February 1, 2023, there were 56 foreign athletes from 12 countries who have indicated their interest.
