SOPECAM : Women Schooled On Fibroid

A roundtable discussion on the female-related pathology took place at the headquarters of the company yesterday March 6, 2023.

In line with activities to mark the 38th edition of the International Women’s Day, workers (mostly women) of the Cameroon News and Publishing Corporation (SOPECAM) have participated in an educative talk on the theme, “Uterine Fibroid, Symptoms and Treatment.” It was an opportunity for the women to understand that some contraception methods expose them to fibroid and other medical complications.
Educating the women about fibroid, the company physician, Dr. Mathias Mabii said uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths of the uterus that often appear during childbearing years. Also called leiomyomas or myomas, the medical specialist said uterine fibroids are not associated with an increased risk of uterine cancer. It was also revealed that fibroids can grow on any area within the uterus and range in size from seedlings, undetectable by the human eye, to bulky masses that can distort and enlarge the uterus. 
According to the doctor, a woman can have a single fibroid or multiple ones. Many women, it was said, have uterine fibroids sometime during their lives. But they might not know because they often cause no symptoms. However, Dr Mathias Mabii said heavy bleeding especially during menstruation is a common symptom of fibroid as well as pelvic discomfort, bladder problems, recital pressure and discomfort or pain during sexual intercourse and unexplained low red blood cell count (anaemia).
