Cameroonian NBA Stars : Understanding Their Disturbing Absence

Some of the reasons why the Embiid’s, Siakam’s and Koloko’s have not been able to join the national team include insurance problems, calendar, multiple nationalities, amongst others.

The last NBA star to have plied his trade for the Cameroon National Basketball Team is Luc Richard Mbah a Moute whose final bus stop for country was in the 2013 Afrobasket in Abidjan. Since Mbah a Moute, whose involvement in the National team was much more of patriotism and personal sacrifices, the national team is yet to get the spark of another NBA player especially at a time when the output has been wanting. But many might be wondering why Cameroon will be falling short of glory on the continent and in the world at a time when its offspring’s in the NBA; the likes of Joel Embiid (Philadelphia 76ers), Pascal Siakam (Toronto Raptors) and Christian Koloko (Toronto Raptors) are making wonders. Even though these players might be eager to wear the green, red, yellow, several factors beyond their control account for why they cannot come and invigorate the Cameroonian national team.  
It is no news that Basketball players are very expensive especially for the likes of Embiid’s, Siakam’s and Koloko’s who have very huge contracts. The problem of Cameroon being able to cover the insurance of these players when called up for competitions now steps in. Even though FIBA is now taking a bigger part of the burden (managing insurances during competitions), it still requires huge amounts of money to handle the insurance before the competition, that is during trainings and friendly matches. Nonetheless, looking at the impact these players will create if they join the national team, it necessitates that the federation alongside government find avenues to reduce the cost on insurance and bring these players in.
