Preventing, Managing Disasters : Gov’t Reflects On Practical Mechanisms

Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute chaired a concertation meeting on April 11, 2023.
Following recurrent catastrophies happening in the country, the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Joseph Dion Ngute on April 11, 2023 chaired a concertation meeting with concerned government Ministers, administrative and elected officials to map out strategies on preventing such mishaps. The crisis meeting was basically dedicated to examining preventive measures and the management of disasters. This comes on the heels of flood occurrences in the Fako Division of the South West Region, Logone and Chari, and Mayo Danay in the Far North, Mfoundi in the Centre Region and Wouri in the Littoral over the years.
In his introductory statement, the Prime Minister noted that such disasters have negative consequences on humans (lost of lives and displacements), material damages (deterioration of roads and other infrastructure, causes landslides) and disrupts economic activities. This, the Head of Government noted sometimes causes famine, development of epidemics and other diseases. The causes of floods, he said, have been observed to result from two main factors. They are natural (heavy downpour, overflooding of water pathways and the development of cracks on dykes) and human factors such as constructing on risk zones, obstruction of drainage systems and the non-respect of town planning construction patterns.
