Measles : Containing The Current Outbreak

With some 5,283 cases of measles confirmed in the country in the last 12 months, a nationwide vaccination campaign is announced for July.
Information from the World Health Organisation (WHO) indicates that measles, which is a highly contagious viral disease that manifests itself through rashes, watery eyes and fever is occurring all over the world. Sources at the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) reveal that measles is endemic in Africa and Cameroon is not left out as the virus is still a significant cause of death in young children.
Statistics from the Expanded Programme on Immunisation show that since April 23, 2023, an ongoing measles outbreak in the country is causing concern. 98 out of the 200 health districts in the country have recorded measles cases over the last 12 months. The disease, it was revealed, is present in all the 10 regions of the country with health districts in the Centre, Littoral, and South West being highly touched. Health experts say if nothing is done, the disease will spread to other parts of the country.
Currently, the government has organised investigation and local responses in measles endemic districts. Communication campaign strategies have been crafted out to contain the epidemic that has infected some 5,283 persons, killing 18. In order to contain the disease and prevent more infections, the Ministry of Public Health has announced a nationwide vaccination campaign from 5-9 July 2023, for children between nine months to five years. During the campaign, the targeted group shall each receive a shot of the vaccine on their shoulders in vaccination sites, enclaved zones, refugee and nomad camps as well all places of assembly (markets, churches, mosques, etc.) Health experts reiterate that the infant measles vaccine does not count as a full vaccination, but offers short-term protection. After the dose, any child should receive two more vaccinations as planned in the standard vaccination schedule.
