Camp Yabassi : Traders Decry Unexplained Collection

They closed their shops and went on the street on Friday, August 25, pleading with the authorities that be to find lasting solutions to their problems.
Dealers of automobile parts in Camp Yabassi, in Douala II, have staged a protest against commercial agents from the Littoral Delegation of Commerce who they say harass and extort money from them without any justifications.
The strike action that took place on Friday, August 25th, 2023 saw the traders shutting down their shops while pleading with the authorities that be to look into their situation. The traders complain that commercial agents from the Littoral regional delegation of Commerce have gone overboard in the manner in which they collect money from them. The traders are forced to pay huge sums of money, sometimes up to millions, even after paying taxes to government coffers. They pled with the government to address the situation.
According to the president of the Traders Union, Lena July Christopher, the commercial collectors have been on their necks, collecting money on several occasions without any receipts. He said they were aware of the taxes they were to pay and have been doing so. He said that they have been paying their money into government coffers against a receipt, but the demands from the regional delegation of Commerce have not been explained, and each time they give money to the commercial agents, no receipt is been issued to them.
