ECCAS : Gabon’s Membership Suspended

The decision by the regional bloc follows the August 30, 2023 overthrow of President Ali Bongo by the military.
Members of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) have announced the suspension of Gabon until the country returns to constitutional order. “ECCAS has decided to suspend Gabon's membership in response to the August 30, 2023 coup that ousted President Ali Bongo Ondimba,” ECCAS announced after an extraordinary session of the conference of chiefs of State and Government of the organization convened on September 4 in Djibloho (Equatorial Guinea).
Reuter news agency reports that during the regional bloc extraordinary meeting, the host and chairperson, President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea, voiced concerns about Gabon's impact on regional peace, security and stability. The suspension of Gabon from ECCAS serves as a significant development in the region, shedding light on the ongoing challenges surrounding leadership, governance, and stability in Central Africa region and beyond.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, September 6, 2023 the President of the Central African Republic (CAR), Faustin Archange Touadera, appointed regional mediator by the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), following last week’s coup d'état arrived in Libreville (Gabon) where he was received by the President of the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI), General Brice Oligui Nguema.
