Behavioural, Financial Challenges Abound

Attacks on public and private structures, imposed lock downs which hinder movements and kidnapping of persons are speed brakes to the smooth implementation of recommendations.
It has been exactly four years since the Major National Dialogue was held to among others, look into the grievances of teachers and lawyers of the North West and South West Regions of the country. Of course, other national issues were discussed. At the end of reflections, recommendations were made and government is in the process of implementing them. In March 2020, the Head of State signed a decree instituting a Follow-up Committee for the Implementation of the Resolutions of the Major National Dialogue. A compendium of actions presented at the fifth session of the Committee held in Buea, South West in August 2023 and chaired by the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Joseph Dion Ngute, indicates that much has been done, though there are still some setbacks. For those in progress, the pace of some is steady and others slow. This has been blamed on wayward behavioural patterns and financial challenges.
The implementation process of some of the recommendations is somewhat slow compared to what was projected, due to the fact that destruction and attacks on the population persist in some areas. Take for example the Presidential Plan for the Reconstruction and Development of the North West and South West Regions, which has the objective of building-back-better destroyed institution and property. Recurrent attacks, imposed lock downs that hinder movement and kidnapping of contractors or staff executing the project are huge speed brakes that slow the smooth and timely execution of the resolutions. A case in point is the recent two-week lock down imposed in the North West and South West Regions to frustrate school resumption.
