Senegal : Growing In Shape

The reigning champions meet the Indomitable Lions in the group phase of the upcoming 2023 AFCON.

When Senegal was pooled alongside Cameroon in Group C of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations which begins next year in Côte d’Ivoire, pundits who have been monitoring football, have been predicting that it is going to a tough one. In effect, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, that are the second most capped team on the continent, play reigning champions, the Teranga Lions of Senegal in their second group game of the AFCON next year.
Going by the September 2023 FIFA ranking, Senegal sits 20th in the world and holds the second place in Africa after Morocco. This tells of the successes of the country this far. Winning the last edition of the AFCON lifted their status on the continent and they have continued to make progress. In their last five encounters before today’s friendly match against Cameroon, the country has recorded two wins, two draws and one loss. The most remarkable of these victories is the 4-2 win against one of the world’s finest teams, Brazil. Former Liverpool star, Sadio Mane, scored two goals in this encounter. The team captain continues to show a lot of determination in leading Senegal to more victories as they brace up ahead of their 17th AFCON appearance.
The international friendly on Monday at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis stadium against Cameroon will help the country further evaluate itself. The game against Cameroon is the first Senegal is playing since the 1-0 loss to Algeria in a friendly last month. During the road to the AFCON, Senegal topped Group L with 14 points, winning four and losing two matches.
