Promoting Banana-Plantain Production In SW : Two Processing Units To Go Operational

The town of Bangem, headquarters of Kupe-Muanenguba Division of the South West Region would in the days ahead host two plantain processing units in order to reduce post-harvest losses and for the production of assorted by-products of plantain. The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Gabriel Mbairobe, personal representative of the Head of State at the event, announced the start of construction works for the project in the coming days.

The Minister said South West Region is an important basin for banana-plantain production in Cameroon which makes it home to the best plantain produced in the country known as ‘Bakossi plantain.’ “We have come here to support the producers because we know they need to handle the entire value chain of the banana-plantain at all levels, from the nursery, production, transformation and distribution. I am going back with confidence that there are better days in this sector,” Gabriel Mbairobe indicated.

In line with the vision of President Paul Biya in the National Development Strategy, NDS30, through which the country would be able to produce 10 million tons of banana-plantain annually, the International Banana-Plantain Festival in its second edition had as drive through the head of the National Association of Actors of the Banana-plantain sector in Cameroon, (FBPC), Samuel Tony Obam to make Cameroon the leading producer of plantain worldwide by 2030. The ceremony also witnessed the signing of some investment agreements with foreign investors intended to improve the competitiveness of the plantain value chain in the South West Region.
