Protecting Intellectual Property : Stakeholders Brainstorm In Douala

For three days; participants at the workshop looked at better ways of harmonizing intellectual property strategies in the digital age.
Members of the African Organization of the Intellectual Property – OAPI met in Douala from 18-20 December 2023 in a workshop organized to build the capacities of representatives of member countries on the exploitation and management of intellectual property rights linked to cultural content in the context of their dissemination through digital channels. The workshop organized by the “Intellectual Property Law and Innovation in Africa” (AfrIPI) project, in collaboration with the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI), was pegged on the theme, “The exploitation of cultural content in the OAPI space in the digital era”. The workshop was a framework for exchanges, sharing of experiences and good practices to ensure a technological turning point beneficial to the African continent in the field of cultural industry.
The workshop which was attended by representatives of collective management societies and administrations responsible for culture in different OAPI member States covered the legal and technical aspects necessary for the development of successful cultural industries in Africa. For three days, participants discussed and adopted a harmonized approach to establish economic models that should lead to the efficient exploitation of cultural creations in a context increasingly focused on digital communication.
According to the Deputy Project Manager of AFRIPI, Mondesir Oualou Panoouala, the AFRIPI project aims at promoting international agreements in the field of intellectual property rights and contribute to enhanced cooperation between the EU and Africa, contribute to strengthening national and regional intellectual property and regional intellectual property institutions, networks and tools more effective and user-friendly intellectual property protection and enforcement systems.
