Gambia : Scorpions Aiming High

For a second participation, Gambia is set to spring up new surprises in the competition.
This is Gambia's second consecutive appearance in the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, aiming to replicate their impressive run in Cameroon, where they reached the quarterfinals of the competition. The performance served as encouragement for the Scorpions who are coming to the 2023 full of ambitions and a strong desire to win the AFCON trophy.
The Gambia will play in group C alongside Senegal, Guinea, and Cameroon. It is the only group that has four teams that reached the second round in the previous edition in Cameroon. To qualify for the 2023 AFCON Gambia played a 2-2 draw with Congo. Gambia is ranked 126 on FIFA Rankings. The Scorpions clinched their ticket to TotalEnergies AFCON 2023, denying the Diables Rouges in the process. Gambia finished in the second spot in Group G, earning qualification with 10 points and a balance sheet of three victories on draw and two defeats.
The Scorpions began training in The Gambia before travelling to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on Monday January 1, 2024 for an eight-day technical training camp ahead of the AFCON finals in Côte d’Ivoire. Tom Saintfiet and his charges will return to Banjul on January 9, 2024 where the team is expected to receive the battle flag from the Presidency and hold a press conference with journalists before their eventual travel for the tournament proper in Cote d'Ivoire.
