Need To Build

For more than a decade, the people of Haiti have not known peace. Since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, the situation has been deteriorating with armed groups controlling much of the capital. Close to 3,000 Haitians have been killed by gang violence this year alone; hundreds of women and children have been kidnapped; and a third of the population is living on $2 a day or less, according to the World Bank. “Gang violence has become our day-to-day. You plan your day knowing that it may be the last time that you are able to go out, and knowing that you may not come back home alive. It's too bad,” a habitant said.
Against this background, there is absolute need to re-build the country in order to bring back peace and security. For this to be a reality, there must be an interim government or council in place to pilot the activities of the country. The members should be selected from the different social class. All elected officials or political class living out of the country should return. The fact that there is no one single elected official left in the country might be an added challenge for the mission. Urgent administrative reforms should be carried out with those in administrative positions committed to work. Corruption which has been the order of day in most institutions should be terminated.
This goes also with the military where a veritable force has to be trained and equipped to stand the different attacks from the gangs. Without a trained force on ground, the mission of the different multinational forces would be complicated and might even be chaotic, because the gangs master the terrain, they are well equipped and live with the civilian population; making it difficult for the “government” soldiers to identify them.
