CAR : Constitutional Council Takes Oath

Members of the Constitutional Council as well as an international judge from the Special Criminal Court were sworn-in on Friday, March 22, 2024. The ceremony that took place at the Bangui Court of Appeal, was chaired by President Faustin Archange Touadera. In the presence of hundreds of guests, each member responded to the call of their name and pledged to respect the fundamental law. At the start of March 2024, the Head of State Faustin Archange Touadera signed a decree appointing new members of the Constitutional Council to replace the current members whose term ends in March, 2024.
In accordance with the new Constitution of August 30, 2023, the method of designation has changed. From nine judges elected by their peers, in corporations, there are now eleven judges. Five of whom are elected, three are chosen by the Head of State, three others by the President of the National Assembly. The mandate of members of this prestigious institution, has also been increased from 7 to 9 years. The outgoing President, Jean-Pierre Waboue and Ines Valerie Waby-Bekaï, have maintained their positions in the new dispositions. In the coming days, the new team made up of magistrates, lawyers and law professors will have to elect a President and a Vice-President of the Council.
