Chad’s Presidential Election : Ten Candidates Authorized To Run

The list was made public on Sunday, March 24, 2024 by the Constitutional Council.
Names of candidates to run for May 6, 2024 presidential election in Chad have been made public. On Sunday, March 24, 2024, the Constitutional Council cleared 10 candidates including that of interim President Mahamat Idriss Deby and the country’s recently-appointed Prime Minister Succes Masra. Notebly absent from the list are two fierce opponents of the military government Nassour Ibrahim Neguy Koursami and Rakhis Ahmat. Presenting the list, the Constitutional Council said their applications had been rejected because they included “irregularities”.
The first round of the long-awaited presidential election has been scheduled for May 6 and the second round on June 22, with provisional results on July 7, 2024. The elections are part of a transition back to democracy from rule by Chad’s military government. It is the first time in Chad’s history that a President and a Prime Minister will face each other in a presidential poll. Prior to the May election, Chadians in December, voted in favour of a new constitution that critics said could help cement Mahamat Deby’s grip on power as it allowed him to run for the presidency.
