“The 17 km Babadjou-Matazem Lot Is Pending Reception”

Ngwaimbi Paul Ayeah, Regional Delegate of Public Works for the North West Region.

What is the exact level of the rehabilitation  works on the Bamenda-Babadjou road?
The rehabilitation of the Bamenda-Babadjou road is in three lots. The first one is the 17 kilometers part from Babadjou to Matazem. The second lot is the 18.05 kilometers stretch from Matazem to Welcome to Bamenda  and the third lot is 4.9 kilometers  by pass road from Welcome to Bamenda to Ecole les Champions. Work started since 2022 on the project and is going on smoothly.
As at now, the first lot which the 17 kilometers of road from Babadjou to Matazem is pending reception, acceptance of the work. The percentage of work there is 98 per cent.  Technically, we are working with the contractor  to accept and verify that all the technicalities have been put in place so that the work is accepted.  On the second lot which is the 18.05 kilometers from Matazem to Welcome to Bamenda, the second team of the  construction company BUNS is mobilised there. We are around 60 per cent of work progress.  The team is working there thoroughly so that before the end of  this year, they will deliver the pavement of the road.  On the third lot, which is the by pass Welcome to Bamenda to Ecole les Champions, because the Minister of Public Works wanted that work should continue there smoothly, he took the decision to terminate the contract of BOFAS   so that a good contractor should be  mobilised in the days ahead.  This will be to see to it that the 4.9 kilometers of road is completely in due time.  When the contract of BOFAS was terminated, we were around 30 per cent of work progress. The remaining 70 per  cent of work can be realised in a couple of months.

On the Matazem-Welcome to Bamenda stretch of road, what remains to be  done?
The contractor has already completed with the hydraulic structures. What is left now is the roadway in the four layers that include: foundation, platform, base cut and runway  layers. It simply means that the contractor is working now to pave the road from Matazem to Welcome to Bamenda  by putting in place all these layers.  I can even say that the platform layer has already gone through by 90 per cent.  The contractors is working.

How far with the award of the new contract for the Welcome to Bamenda-Ecole des Champions  section of the road?
The aim of terminating the contract with BOFAS  was to see into it that the road is well constructed. It simply means that when we award a contract, we expect the contractor to work according to the  technical norms and in time. The will of the project’s owner who is the Minister of Public Works is to use the rules and regulations in force to select a contractor who will be better than the previous contractor in terms of quality work and time to finish the  work.  ...
