Employment Potential : Over 235,000 Jobs Awaited This Year

This is an assessment from the employment potential document of the 2024 public Investment budget, presented yesterday, May 22, 2024 in Yaounde.

Statistics from the results of the employment potential of the 2024 investment budget in the country have revealed that some 235,714 permanent, temporary or occasional jobs opportunities could be generated by the Public Investment Budget (PIB) this year. This was made known during a workshop yesterday, May 22, 2024 in Yaounde, to present the results of the Assessment of the Employment Potential of the 2024 PIB of the government to the different public administrations in the country. The workshop was chaired by the Minister of Employment and Vocational Training (MINEFOP), Issa Tchiroma Bakary.
Organised by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Ministry of Employment and Vocational Training, the results clearly indicated that amongst the 235,714 jobs to be created this year, 13,034 opportunities are for senior staff, 45,965 for technicians and 176,714 for those in the informal sectors. The assessment also showed that the ‘Small and Medium-Sized Infrastructures’ category has the greatest number of work opportunities, since it makes use of the High-Labour Intensive Unit Approaches. The innovation in the assessment of the employment potential of the 2024 Public Investment Budget focused on jobs likely to be generated by the projects of the Regional and Local Authorities. As decentralization accelerates and powers are transferred to the local authorities, different speakers at the workshop reiterated the crucial need to highlight their contribution to local development, which, if properly managed, can boost the development of the country as a whole. 
As far as Regional and Local Authorities (RLAs) are concerned, data showed that about FCFA 83 billion from the Public Investment Budget have been allocated to the RLAs. Hence, 149,688 work opportunities (60 per cent) are likely to be generated: 8,610 for senior staff, 30, 564 for technicians and 110,514 in the informal sector.
