The Road To The Presidency

Before getting to the level of election at the United Nations General Assembly, Philemon Yang's candidacy passed through many stages.


The President of the Republic, Paul Biya, from the onset deployed all the means for Cameroon to get to the Presidency of the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations Organisation.
On October 16, 2020, he gave his high accord for the submission of Cameroon's candidacy file. This was followed in December 2020 by the submission of the candidacy file at the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia after the approval of the African Group in New York. However, in April 2021 South Africa submitted the file of its candidate at the African Union.
The endorsement of Cameroon’s candidacy after the involvement of the Head of State moved to the Sub-regional level. In November 2021, the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) endorsed Cameroon’s candidacy during their 52nd session in Gabon.  The Heads of State and Government of ECCAS further supported Cameroon’s candidacy during their 20th summit in Kintele, Republic of Congo.
It was in January 2023 that Philemon Yang was officially designated as Cameroon's candidate for the position of the President of the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations Organisation.  The name of the candidate was announced during the 42nd session of the Executive Council of the African Union.
