Chemicals play a major role in everyday lives. They are part of what people eat, work and clean their environment. Despite their prevalence in daily lives, majority of these chemicals are hazardous and can seriously affect the health of humans and wildlife everywhere. Most disturbing is the fact that these products are seen just anywhere in various homes, rendering the environment dangerous especially for kids and the old.

Many people wonder just how harmful the fumes from everyday household products are? Often, when a chemical, fume, or vapour is harmful, its strong smell or odour is the first identifier of this. This is also the case for other household products people actually enjoy their smell. For instance, when someone is mopping the floor with fresh, lemon-scented cleaner, they think it smells nice, but in actual fact they are polluting the air inside their home. Common household cleaning products, from oven cleaner, laundry detergent, carpet cleaner, air fresher, furniture polisher and drain cleaner, contain chemicals that get released into the air over time, causing harm to human health. Common household cleaning products on the market can irritate eyes or throat and even cause headaches or further complicate existing health conditions like allergies, asthma, and multiple chemical sensitivities. Experts reveal that some of these products release dangerous chemicals like ammonia and bleach or mix with other substances to produce dangerous indoor pollutants. Some of these products contain volatile organic compounds which over time can lead to eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, and in severe cases, even damage to the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system.
