Waste Collection : Yaounde, Again Submerged In Garbage

The capital city of Cameroon, Yaounde is again submerged in garbage. That which seemed to be something of the past is more and more present among its inhabitants. Household waste is once more the unfriendly friend in town. Several neighbourhoods are again turning into pollution midpoints with waste dotted everywhere. The city dwellers are once again gasping for fresh air as they move along main roads in the city. Sidewalks in the town have once again transformed into waste disposal grounds as main dustbins overflow with waste due to improper waste collection. This is a situation that seemed to have dwindled into oblivion. It is resurfacing with all the consequences that comes with it. The question many people are asking is what has become of the waste collection system in the town? 
The filthy nature of Yaounde is deplorable and begs for concern. From the Yaounde I subdivision going towards the Yaounde III subdivision or the Yaounde IV and VI sub-divisions, the situation is same. Heaps of dirt can be seen along the main roads, coughing out pungent smell. Sidewalks are now covered with garbage. Road users jump over heaps of dirt in a bid to carry out their daily duties. Roadside vendors have succumbed to the stench coming from the filth. Almost all the public dustbins are overflowing with dirt. Flies accompany inhabitants as they walk pass such areas. The garbage heaps seek for attention. But everyone turns a blind eye.
From the Obogogo to the Damas neighbourhood in the Yaounde III subdivision, along a stretch of road of about 500 metres, four different garbage heaps could be seen along the road. Inhabitants in the locality say the situation seems not to change. “It is disturbing and persisting. We are dying and suffocating in the disgusting odour coming from the heaps of dirt”, an inhabitant lamented. Adding that the current presence of dirt along the main roads have not only made dirt their companion but also questions the waste collection management in the subdivision. While moving towards the Damas neighbourhood, a huge amount of dirt can be seen stretching over 500 metres along the road. Nobody can walk along that stretch of the road.
