AU Peace, Security Council : Strides Covered In September

Cameroon’s stewardship of the institution last month was marked by seven high level meetings, field missions and special sessions.
Cameroon assumed the chairmanship of the African Union Peace and Security Council for the month of September 2024. A balance sheet presented by the Permanent Representative of Cameroon to the African Union and Chairperson of the Peace and Security Council for September 2024, Ambassador Churchill Ewumbue-Monono, indicates that a total of seven high level meetings were organised. They included, one at the Ministerial level, four at the ambassadorial level, and one each at the level of the Committee of Experts (CoE) and Military Staff Committee (MSC).
At the Ministerial level, External Relations Minister, Mbella Mbella presided over a meeting on September 25, 2024 at the Permanent Mission of the African Union at the United Nations in New York, in the presence of the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat. Issues examined were on the theme, “New threats to security in Africa and the future of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union." In a context where security challenges in Africa have taken a different level, Minister Mbella Mbella noted that it is a question of finding solutions to perfect the African peace and security architecture and achieve the ideals set for the continent, namely silencing the guns in Africa by 2030 in line with the Agenda 2063.
In accordance to its vision statement of making the chairmanship “lean but impactful,” three open sessions were held at the ambassadorial level. One was on the protection of journalists and freedom of information in conflict zones, and the other on civil-military relations and conflict management in Africa.
