South Sudan’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Pal Mai Deng has submitted a memo to the Council of Ministers under the Nyemur/Limur Multi-Purpose Water and Resource Development Project, outlining plans to construct two dams in South Sudan and Uganda. The project was presented by the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, on October 3, 2024 during a cabinet meeting chaired by President Salva Kiir Mayardit. The Nyemur/Limur Project, a joint initiative between South Sudan and Uganda, aims to build dams for irrigation and water supply in both countries. The total cost of the project has been estimated at $96 million, with $36 million allocated for the construction of a dam inside South Sudan.
Speaking to reporters after the cabinet meeting, Jacob Maiju Korok, the Deputy National Minister of Information stated that, after thorough discussions at the Council of Ministers, the validation of the project has been deferred with specific recommendations for the minister of water resources and irrigation to identify specific areas of the project and also carry out further consultations with other stakeholders, including communities that are likely to be directly impacted by the project, before any final decision can be passed.
