Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting : Leaders Commit To Resilient Democratic Institutions

The high level gathering that held in Samoa and chaired by His Majesty King Charles III, saw the participation of Cameroon’s Prime Minister, Joseph Dion Ngute.


The 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held in Apia, Samoa on October 25-26, 2024 with King Charles III chairing the high-level gathering, in his capacity as Head of the Government. Deliberations took place under the theme “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth.” In participation was Cameroon’s Prime Minister, Joseph Dion Ngute, representing the President of the Republic, Paul Biya. Besides participating in the official opening ceremony, the Prime Minister also took part in the reception offered by King Charles III and Queen Camila, and held bilateral talks with the Prime Minister of Samoa. 
At the end of the deliberations, a 52-point leaders statement was adopted in Samoa. The highlight of the event was the election of a new Secretary General of the Commonwealth, in the person of Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchewey, Ghanaian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration. Amongst the resolutions adopted, is the determination to promote resilient for institutions, economies and individuals. “Strengthening democratic institutions is at the core of our Commonwealth Aiga, united as we are by shared values of democracy, human rights, peace, tolerance, respect and understanding, the rule of law, good governance and respect for diversity. Heads of Government committed to continue building and supporting resilient democratic institutions and governance structures, which are pivotal for sustainable and inclusive development and for fostering peace,” partly reads one of the recommendations.  While reaffirming their commitment to the Commonwealth Charter, the leaders also called for sustainable peace and the amicable resolution of disputes in accordance with international law.
