Because Water Is Key To Hygiene, Sanitation

The “Association des Femmes Professionnelles de l'eau, de l'Assainissement et de l'Environnement du Cameroun” AFPEEC met with female journalists in Yaounde on November 20, 2024.

To discuss a working arrangement to give more visibility to the association’s activities. “AFPEEC is particularly interested in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, WASH issues and would like to work more closely with the media in order to promote WASH advocacy and female leadership of WASH issues. Journalists are closer to the public, especially those who don’t have easy access to water or do not understand the importance of hygiene and handwashing,” explained Mrs. Edwige Akpe Tsanga epouse Balla Edzoa, AFPEEC Deputy Secretary General.  A staff with Cameroon Water Utility, Camwater headquarters in Douala. Mrs. Talla stood in for AFPEEC’s President.

Information, Access
Even when some people understand the importance of water to hygiene, they do not always have access to it. Journalists can therefore pass on AFPEEC’s message for WASH to be promoted in all parts of Cameroon. Especially as government is investing more in sanitation and WASH, Balla Edzoa added.

Strategic Partnership
By working with the media, AFPEEC seeks to strengthen strategic partnerships to maximize the impact of WASH messages. Amplify media coverage of its activities and projects. And to work with dedicated stakeholders on joint projects. AFPEEC wishes to see every professional woman in the water, sanitation, and environment sector play a vital role. Because, together, they can transform society by promoting inclusive and sustainable solutions.

Promoting Female WASH Leadership
“The meeting with the media was part of activities of the first national week on Hygiene and Sanitation. Our theme was “Partnership between AFPEEC and female journalists: Promoting female WASH leadership.” The week was launched by the Ministry of Water and Energy,” Mrs. Talla Edwige said.

Impact Of Climate Change
According to her, climate change has increased the gravity of the problem of water and sanitation. “This is why government is stepping up efforts on improving access to drinkable water through increased investments by Camwater. Without water, hygiene will not take place. Water is life. Water is the key to WASH, hygiene, laundry, bathing... You cannot talk about hygiene without mentioning water,” Talla Edwige stressed.
