Four years after leaving the White House, Donald Trump is set to come back, after millions of Americans voted to give him a second chance. Prior to his re-election on November 5, Mr Trump survived two assassination attempts. The decision by most Americans in key states to vote for him did not come by surprise. Economy and immigration concerns were top on their agenda while deciding who should be the 47th President of the United States. At 78, Donald Trump now holds the distinction of being the oldest man ever elected President, surpassing the record previously set by President Joe Biden. The historic political return to the White House after a four-year hiatus, also makes him the first President since Grover Cleveland in the late 1800s to lose re-election and then comeback to claim victory in a later run.
Trump’s appeal to voters centered on his emphatic promises to secure the southern border through stringent measures, revive American manufacturing with protectionist tariffs reminiscent of 19th-century economic policies, and withdraw the United States from entangling global conflicts. These commitments resonated strongly in a deeply divided nation, fueling his landslide victory over Vice President Kamala Harris. At the end of the highly mediatized election that saw sitting President Joe Biden stepping down during the tense campaign, polls results showed that Trump retained substantial backing from men and white voters without college degrees, while also making gains among traditionally Democratic-leaning groups, such as Latino and young voters. With a clear popular vote victory and control of the Electoral College, Trump enters his second term with a firm mandate, a distinction he lacked in 2016.
